Fast Like a Monk!
February 27, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm
The Christian Lent period (Ash Wednesday to Easter) is a traditional period of self-denial and fasting prior to the celebration of Christ’s resurrection. However, while this has often meant abstaining from meat or other kinds of food, Bavarian monks of the 17th century secretly looked forward to this time of year. To compensate for their decrease in nutrients from salad, bread, fruit, and meat, they subsisted on water and “liquid bread”—beer!
To mark the occasion, the London Amateur Brewers invite homebrewers to submit their best interpretation of beers that have sustained monks in centuries past. In addition to the four main Trappist styles, Doppelbock, Helles Bock (also known as Lentebock or Lentenbock in Belgium and the Netherlands; Maibock in parts of Germany) are also rooted in the monastery tradition. And I’m sure at least one cheeky abbot has brewed a Rauchbier to celebrate Ash Wednesday!
So celebrate and prepare for the season by brewing a beer the monks might have made! Send it to us and you might win!
